The Role

We have several opportunities for qualified Science and Engineering professionals who possess knowledge of nuclear safety and radiation protection principles and experience of working in high-hazard regulated environments. You will need to demonstrate the ability to incorporate scientific, engineering and behavioural reasoning into nuclear safety and radiation protection regulation and licensing.

You will join the Regulation and Licensing directorate within the Nuclear-Powered Submarine Regulatory Design. Our Nuclear Regulatory Technical Officers will support the directorate in the stand-up, and delivering of, key functions for the future Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator (ANNPSR), such as conducting licensing for regulated activities, monitoring and compliance, investigating and taking regulatory action.

As an APS 6 Nuclear Regulatory Technical Officer, you will be accountable under broad direction to assist in the assessment of complex nuclear engineering and science work, and exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures.

As the APS 6 Nuclear Regulatory Technical Officer, you will:

  • Require to have knowledge of nuclear safety and radiological protection principles.
  • Require to have or be capable of obtaining an in-depth knowledge of regulatory frameworks, government decision-making and policy requirements to assist with nuclear regulation and licensing.
  • Demonstrate technical knowledge and provide advice and recommendations on the assessment and provision of licences for facilities as well as the regulatory audit, inspection, compliance and assurance of facility licence holders related to nuclear powered submarines that fall under the regulatory framework of the future Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator (ANNPSR).
  • Actively managing key stakeholder relationships and identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes.
  • Be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

Note: Due to the training and development requirements for these roles, international travel will likely be required. We are seeking individuals who are willing and able to work abroad in the United Kingdom or the United States of America for periods of time which may span anywhere from three to 24 months. Domestic and international travel to other locations may also be required for additional training opportunities (e.g. short courses).

Whilst this position has been advertised through Department of Defence, in line with the announcement made by the Australian Government on 14 Mar 23, this position will move to a new Statutory Agency with an effective yet to be confirmed.

Applicants with exceptional skills, experience or expertise may be eligible for additional remuneration in the form of a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) or Individual Flexibility Arrangement (IFA), which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement 2024 (DECA 2024). This may include additional remuneration and/or the variation of other conditions. In these cases, total remuneration will comprise of base salary + additional remuneration + Superannuation.
