We are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

Lakeland Senior High School (SHS) is a thriving school community. Extracurricular programs are in abundance and after-school homework classes are well attended. Staff are highly committed and seek to develop friendly and supportive working relationships with students. A major school goal is to become the school of choice for most of the youth living in the district. In working towards this goal, the school has excelled in many areas and developed programs that engender success. Lakeland SHS provides a calm and friendly atmosphere where students are encouraged to succeed and take pride in what they achieve. In addition to an Endorsed Education Support Program, the school has two very successful approved Specialist Programs in Music Technology and Sports Science.

The Role

We are actively seeking highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistants who possess a genuine passion for supporting students with special needs. The core objectives of this position revolve around assisting students in realizing their full potential by fostering academic, physical, and social development.

As an Education Assistant – Special Needs, your role encompasses facilitating the delivery of structured education programs. This involves overseeing small groups of students under the teacher's guidance to nurture young minds and contribute to the overall health and well-being of students. Your work environment is collaborative, providing crucial support to students within the classroom setting. Valuable experience in working with students dealing with Autism spectrum disorder, mental health issues, medical conditions, and behavioural special needs would be highly advantageous.

  • A CV of up to five (5) pages outlining your employment history and professional learning summary relevant to this position
  • A two to three (2-3) page statement addressing the following selection criteria as outlined in the attached JDF
  1. Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  2. Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  3. Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  4. Demonstrated ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  6. Demonstrated ability to assist with general health and well-being of students
