The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is seeking dynamic and passionate individuals to join its Board as Non-Executive Directors. As Australia’s preeminent orchestra, the MSO is dedicated to creating transformative musical experiences that connect communities and inspire audiences worldwide. With a history spanning over a century and a commitment to artistic excellence, the MSO is embarking on an exciting phase of Board renewal and is looking for individuals with expertise in key strategic areas to help shape its future.

About the MSO Board

The MSO Board plays a crucial role in guiding the organisation’s strategic direction, ensuring strong governance, and securing its long-term sustainability. The Board oversees financial management, risk compliance, stakeholder engagement, and organisational culture while supporting the artistic vision of the Orchestra. The MSO is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive Board that reflects the communities it serves.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Arts and Cultural Leadership – Experience in performing arts, cultural policy, or creative industries.
  • Construction and Major Projects – Experience overseeing large-scale infrastructure or capital development projects.
  • Fundraising and Philanthropy – Proven success in philanthropic engagement and securing major donations.
  • Musical Practitioner – Accomplished experience as a musician, conductor, or composer with deep orchestral knowledge.
  • Marketing and Communications – Expertise in brand development, audience growth, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Commercial and Governance – Corporate law, intellectual property, or not-for-profit governance expertise, strategic planning, revenue generation, and organisational development.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Have a deep passion for the arts and a commitment to the MSO’s mission.
  • Possess strong strategic thinking and governance experience.
  • Preferably have prior Board or senior leadership experience.
  • Can commit time to Board meetings, committee participation, and MSO events.

Remuneration

The Director positions are voluntary positions and not remunerated.
