The Opportunity
Join our People Services team at BlueScope as a Senior Payroll Officer , where you’ll play a vital role in delivering accurate, timely, and compliant payroll services across our Australian operations. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a supportive and collaborative environment that values expertise, integrity, and continuous improvement.
In this role, you’ll be responsible for managing and processing the fortnightly pay run , ensuring adherence to all relevant business, legislative, and regulatory requirements. You’ll also support the day-to-day payroll operations, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team and driving service excellence.
Based in Adelaide (CBD) or Mount Waverley, Melbourne , this role offers an excellent opportunity to further develop your leadership capability while actively contributing to transformation initiatives.
What Will You Do?
As a Senior Payroll Officer, your key responsibilities will include:
- Managing payroll case allocations using SNOW , coordinating tickets and weekly post-payroll activities.
- Administering fortnightly pay runs , including bank files and Single Touch Payroll , ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Reviewing work submitted by Payroll Officers, providing coaching, feedback, and oversight.
- Investigating and resolving complex payroll queries and managing escalations from employees, managers, and Finance.
- Interpreting Enterprise Agreements and modern awards , ensuring compliance with Australian payroll legislation .
- Processing and reviewing superannuation and other statutory payments.
- Generating accurate payroll reports and supporting system testing and enhancement initiatives.
- Identifying and contributing to process improvement initiatives across the payroll function.
- Maintaining accurate timekeeping data and supporting payroll-related financial reporting.
- Ensuring compliance with internal policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements at all times.
More About You
Essential Skills and Experience
- Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation (e.g., tax, superannuation, LSL, termination, redundancy)
- Experience working with complex payroll systems
- Demonstrated ability to interpret Enterprise Agreements (EAs) and Awards
- Payroll compliance and checking experience
- Exposure to high-volume payroll environments
- Strong customer service mindset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel – intermediate to advanced)
Preferable Skills and Experience
- Exposure to SAP Payroll , or a willingness to learn
- Familiarity with ServiceNow , or an openness to developing capability in this system
- Involvement in payroll-related projects , such as system integrations, process improvements, or new platform implementations
- Understanding of or exposure to Six Sigma or Lean methodologies , or a desire to learn
