As part of the broader Revenue Group within DTF, the Revenue Forecasting team is at the leading edge of forecasting practice in Australia. We deliver accurate, reliable and timely revenue forecasts that support evidence-based decision making. The team is responsible for forecasting Victoria's state taxation revenue including payroll, property, gambling, insurance and motor vehicle taxes, and Victoria's GST revenue
Our applied research work also informs strategic policy development that improves the living standards of all Victorians. This work program includes the management of Victoria's Economic Bulletin – DTF's influential staff research publication.

About the role
Working as an economist in the Revenue Forecasting team you will be part of a high-performing team responsible for forecasting revenue of around $70 billion per year. This high-profile role is integral to financial management in Victoria.
As a key member of the team, you'll use your exceptional analytical skills to understand trends in, and the risks to, the outlook for the Victoria's taxation and GST revenue. You will apply advanced modelling techniques to develop accurate revenue projections that inform critical government decision-making.
You will have the opportunity to undertake influential, applied research work to inform strategic policy development. Working with research partners in the public and private sectors, and in academia, you'll have access to thought leaders and unique data that can help you deliver insights that improve the living standards of all Victorians.
Key Accountabilities
As a member of the Revenue Forecasting Team, you will be accountable for:
- Revenue Forecasting Excellence — prepare accurate forecasting advice, and identify emerging trends and potential risks to Victoria's revenue outlook
- Model Development & Innovation — develop and maintain revenue forecasting models and identify new methods to improve the quality of revenue forecasts
- Applied Research — undertake research on complex economic, financial and/or public policy issues.
- Communication — Deliver briefings to senior management and government that are timely, accessible, accurate and fit for purpose
- Collaboration — partner with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that revenue forecasts reflect the most up-to-date information and policy developments, and to build research capacity
- Leadership & Culture — Contribute to a positive, high-performance environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, analytical rigor, and collaborative problem-solving.

About you
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
- experience using economic and econometric models as the basis for the preparation of forecasts
- ability to solve complex problems by applying economic or econometric frameworks and synthesising independent research
- an ability to manage projects analysing large or complex data sets and undertake independent research with a strong attention to detail, and
- familiarity using EViews, R, Python or Stata to analyse and interpret data would be advantageous
- an ability to prepare high quality verbal and written briefings and advice, including an ability to convey complex issues persuasively and effectively in plain language
- experience working within a team to collaborate and support others to pursue common goals
- ability to identify, build and maintain strong networks and relationships with stakeholders to achieve team objectives
Experience and qualifications
- Appropriate qualification in economics or a related field.
