About the Role
The Principal Electrical Engineer will lead the design and delivery of secondary systems for HV and EHV infrastructure projects. This includes the development and review of protection, control, metering, and SCADA systems for new substations, upgrades, and renewable connections. Working closely with transmission operators, consultants, and internal teams, the role provides technical authority across project lifecycles.
You will also support the mentoring of engineers and ensure designs align with Australian standards, client specifications, and network requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, review, and approve protection and control designs for HV substation and grid connection projects
- Specify and oversee SCADA, RTU, HMI, and communications system integration
- Prepare and review IED configurations, SLDs, wiring diagrams, and settings files
- Ensure compliance with AS/NZS standards, NSP requirements, and protection philosophies
- Lead FAT, SAT, and commissioning support for new and modified secondary systems
- Collaborate with primary design, civil, and grid connection teams to ensure seamless integration
- Engage directly with transmission network service providers, OEMs, and construction partners
- Support project scheduling, resourcing, and coordination of internal and subcontracted engineering
- Provide engineering sign-off and technical authority on complex secondary systems packages
- Mentor and support junior engineers, helping to build long-term internal capability
- Contribute to internal standards development, process improvement, and knowledge sharing
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- 10+ years' experience in secondary systems, protection, and control within the power sector
- Demonstrated experience delivering substation and grid connection projects in the NEM
- Deep understanding of HV protection, SCADA, and control system design and commissioning
- Familiar with standards and practices of transmission operators and AEMO
- Proficient with protection settings tools, CAD platforms, and SCADA/RTU software
- Strong communication skills with experience managing technical stakeholders
- Experience mentoring engineers and supporting technical development
