About the role:

The Principal Data Engineer responsible for a data platform usually plays a significant and wide-ranging role within an organisation. This includes, but is not limited to, designing the architecture, building and maintaining cloud-based data warehouses and ETL processes, implementing technical standards, and offering advisory support to various stakeholders.

The Principal Data Engineer will be responsible for supporting key platforms, including Common Data Layer (CDL), Advanced Analytics Platform (AAP), VAHI Information Management Environment (VIME), and other platforms within Data Services domain as determined by leadership priorities.

About you:

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Provide leadership, guidance and authoritative advice to internal and external stakeholders and prepare and present detailed and comprehensive reports.
  • Deliver high-quality business intelligence, authoritative advice, and recommendations to senior management on the technical aspects of data profiling and integration, as well as development and advisory services to a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Provide ETL development expertise to create physical models from requirements and conceptual/logical models; reverse engineer code and algorithms from legacy systems as needed and develop comprehensive ETL processes from source data to future data models.
  • Provide timely expert advice and develop open and effective communication strategies including collection of highly complex, contentious, or sensitive information on matters of staff or business.
  • Manage and oversee the full life cycle of projects to meet departmental objectives

Qualifications / Specialist Expertise

  • A relevant IT related degree or qualification related to information management is required for this role.
  • Extensive demonstrated experience and expertise in designing, developing, and supporting data warehousing, ETL and analytic and reporting assets from complex and disparate administrative data sources.
  • Experience using the following Azure components essential:
    • Azure SQL
    • Azure Data Factory
    • Azure Databricks
    • Azure Active Directory
    • Azure Functions
    • Azure Web App
    • Azure Analysis Services
  • Advanced skills in SQL and SSIS and demonstrated experience in an Azure environment.
  • Experience in Python / PySpark.
  • Experience in Microsoft Fabric.
  • Experience developing within a Kimball star schema data warehouse.
  • Extensive demonstrated experience in visualisation and communication of complex datasets using business intelligence tools such as Power BI.
  • Experience designing and developing tabular cubes.
  • Can read and write DAX and MDX.
  • Can work with SME's, Scrum Master, Business Analyst, and other internal and external customers to extract requirements to build test cases.
