We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Technical Support Officer (Mechanical/Civil) to support the delivery of innovative technical projects that enhance both teaching and research within the College of Science and Engineering. In this dynamic position, you will be responsible for the design, development, construction, commissioning, and documentation of specialised civil and mechanical equipment.
As a Technical Support Officer (Mechanical/Civil), your key responsibilities will also include:
Managing and maintaining engineering teaching laboratories, including performing repairs and calibrations on both commercial and custom-built lab and workshop equipment. Designing, developing, constructing, commissioning, and documenting specialised civil & mechanical equipment from general specifications to Australian Standards where relevant. Providing expert advice, training, supervision, and feedback to staff and students on equipment use, sample preparation, practical engineering design, and safety protocols.About You
You are a technically proficient professional with a trade qualification in Fitting and Turning or Toolmaking, complemented by an Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (or an equivalent qualification). You will have sound experience with engineering tools and machines and will be highly proficient in the use of manual and numerically controlled machining methods suited to specific construction tasks. You bring a proven track record of independently developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialised mechanical or civil equipment.
You have a keen eye for detail, a solutions-focused mindset, and a strong customer service ethic. Your ability to balance practical trade skills with analytical thinking will set you apart.
Ideally, you will also bring:
Proficiency in numerical control (NC) machining and experience using industry-standard CAD/CAM software such as Autodesk™ or SolidWorks™ (desirable). Practical experience conducting mechanical/civil engineering tests (e.g. for concrete, steel, soil, and hydrology) in line with relevant Australian Standards (desirable).Life at Flinders
