The Women’s Safety Services of Central Australia (WoSSCA) is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation that operates on a feminist framework and is committed to assisting and enabling women and children experiencing domestic and family violence. WoSSCA provides several services which include: 24-hour Crisis Accommodation, Urban and Remote Outreach services, Court Support, Men’s Behaviour Change Women’s Safety work and Community Development and Training.


Function:
The Aboriginal Cultural Advisor will provide advice to the WoSSCA Leadership Team and our staff on strategic and operational issues regarding provision of culturally appropriate domestic and family violence services. This can take the form of specialist advice on specific clients accessing the service, mentoring and training for staff and development or review of relevant policies and procedures. The Advisor will work with the WoSSCA Chief Executive Officer, our Leadership Team and staff to identify service improvement opportunities and undertake effective community and stakeholder engagement to support the work that WoSSCA undertakes to reduce the prevalence and impact of domestic and family violence within our community.


Duties and Responsibilities
• Work with the WoSSCA Leadership Team and the Chief Executive Officer in working towards the delivery of a culturally appropriate and secure service, through the provision of advice on specific cultural issues
•Support and mentor employees within a safe and positive working environment
•Take a lead role in consultation with women accessing our service, community and key stakeholders to support and promote cultural engagement
•Work alongside other WoSSCA staff in engaging with clients regarding service improvements
•Assist in reviewing and implementing practice and service change to improve cultural safety and competency
•Represent and promote WoSSCA through professional and community networking, meetings, presentations and promotional activities
•Assist with the development of culturally relevant information and resources regarding WoSSCA services
•Participate in internal WoSSCA leadership and operational meetings
•Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date records in regard to activity of the position, utilise WoSSCA computer and communication systems
•Adhere to WoSSCA policy, management directions and administrative procedures and participate in professional development activities and training
•Perform any other duties as reasonably directed by the Chief Executive Officer
Selection Criteria - Essential
•Demonstrated knowledge of domestic and family violence and the issues that may impact upon service delivery
•Previous experience and a demonstrated ability to represent an Aboriginal perspective in strategic and operational forums
•Demonstrated possession of effective oral and written communication skills in a cross-cultural environment
•Previous experience in using your initiative, problem solving and consultation skills to review and develop strategies for service improvement and effectively manage change processes
•Proven ability to develop and deliver information about cultural knowledge and competency, particularly in a case management and/or crisis intervention context
•Proven ability in consultation, networking and negotiation skills and the ability to initiate feedback to peers in consultation with the relevant team manager or the CEO
•Demonstrated capacity to maintain client confidentiality
•Ability to work both autonomously and in the context of a team
•Ability to adhere to all WoSSCA policy and procedures as well as working in accordance to the ethics, mission and vision of WoSSCA


Selection Criteria – Desirable
•A tertiary qualification in a discipline related to the work being undertaken and/or demonstrated extensive experience within the community services sector
•Knowledge and understanding of Central Australian Aboriginal services and communities
Mandatory requirements:
•A National Police Criminal History check (less than 3 months Old) with acceptable outcome.
•Northern Territory Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
•Current NT Driver’s Licence.
•Current First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one.


Compliance/Policies/Procedures:
This position will work under the policies and procedures of WoSSCA and in accordance with the ethics, mission statement and vision of our organisation as the employer. It will also meet the relevant policy and legislative requirements of the funding body and the government.


WoSSCA programs are largely funded through government grants and a close relationship exists between the organisation and relevant government departments. Therefore, an appreciation and understanding of relevant government policies, initiatives and their applications is necessary to the success of the organisation.
