The Program The Indigenous Trainee Development Program is an exciting and rewarding 18-month opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to gain an entry-level position within the Australian Public Services, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and Parks Australia.

Who we are
Australia’s natural and cultural heritage is unique. Our land and seascapes are distinctive, home to plants and animals found nowhere else in the world, and to some of the oldest living cultures on earth. These environments and cultures are an essential part of our national identity, and visitors travel from across the country and the world to experience them. The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). We work to showcase these natural and cultural wonders to the world, demonstrating to all why these places are so special, and inspiring communities to become more invested in their care and future.
Booderee National Park, with its coastal habitats is one of three national parks, leased by their Aboriginal owners to the Director of National Parks, and jointly managed by Traditional Owners and Parks Australia. In addition to ongoing management of the park’s natural and cultural heritage, this branch also looks after Parks Australia’s corporate services from the office in Canberra including, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Customer Experience and Destination Planning.
Beyond the spinifex sand plains of arid central Australia lies Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, one of three national parks leased by their Aboriginal owners to the Director of National Parks and jointly managed by Traditional Owners and Parks Australia. Parks Australia assists with ongoing management of the park’s natural and cultural heritage. This branch also manages a rich and fascinating range of island ecosystems and habitats, including oceanic Pulu Keeling, Norfolk and Christmas Island National Parks.
The Job
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to experience conservation and land management practices, day to day Park operations and the ability to communicate and operate in a complex cultural and social environment:

  • participate in designated park patrols, assisting in regulatory compliance monitoring, incident response operations such as firefighting and suppression, search and rescue, park evacuation and first aid response
  • assist in maintaining the appearance of the park, reporting, and making safe hazards, preparing camping areas, maintaining of park roads, walking tracks, botanical gardens, removing rubbish, cleaning of park facilities and performing repairs on park infrastructure and assets
  • assist in the management of the Park’s biodiversity, including mammal survey, threatened species management, feral pest control, and weed control
  • assist in the horticultural management of the Booderee Botanic Gardens, including weeding, plant propagation, and general horticultural management
  • assist with the delivery of park interpretive, visitor service and public relations activities including face-to-face interpretive presentations for a variety of talks, walks, cultural and educational programs focusing on the natural and cultural values of the Park.
What you'll gain from the experience
Throughout the 18-month program, you will gain on the job learning and exposure to the workings of the Public Service and Parks Australia. During this time, you will obtain a Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, complete multiple rotations within the National Park with exposure to Operations, Finance, Tourism and Visitor Services and Joint-Management.
There will also be an opportunity to visit other jointly managed National Parks and Marine Parks for further learning and development opportunities. Upon the successful completion of the program, you will then be eligible for an advancement to the APS3 Level and a permanent position within Parks Australia to continue your career within the APS.

Please note:
  • The successful applicant must have the ability to obtain and maintain a working with children and vulnerable people check.
  • The successful applicant must hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence.
  • You will be required to wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations, in accordance with the department’s uniform policy.
  • You may be required to wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.
This program is for new entrants to the APS and staff who want a permanent ongoing role.
Eligibility
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
Pre-employment checks - your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period.
Probationary period - Any new engagement to the APS will be subject to the completion of a 6 month probationary period.
