Job Description

The Role

The role of Senior Underwriter, Protection, Australia is to provide high quality underwriting assessments and support all key underwriting related activities within the underwriting team in Australia.

As a Senior Underwriter you will be working closely with the AVP, Underwriting, Protection, Australia to develop and implement an underwriting proposition that meets both client needs as well as being consistent with PLRA’s strategic focus.

In addition, as a Senior Underwriter you will be expected to assist with the management of a portfolio of insurance and UnderwriteMe partner clients. You will also be expected to develop and implement underwriting mentoring training and development plans for clients as and when required.

Duties

  • Underwriting (including retrospective underwriting opinions) of life, critical illness, and disability benefits. Discuss medically complex cases with the Consultant Medical Officers and/or AVP, Underwriting, Protection, Australia where appropriate.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of the PLRA underwriting and risk management strategy.
  • Assist in the development of PLRA’s profile and brand in Australia and internationally.
  • Development and mentoring of key client and internal underwriting staff as required. Participate in client underwriting reviews and training, including preparation, execution, and reporting on client specific engagement plans. Management of a portfolio of insurance and UnderwriteMe partner client accounts. Produce and contribute to reports on client underwriting experience and trends.
  • Provide support to the AVP, Underwriting, Protection, Australia on all underwriting related issues (e.g. Specialist / R&D Project Management as required).
  • Contribute expertise in the assessment of new business opportunities and quotations. Develop both technical and personal skills to a high level.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of the underwriting administration and management information systems.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience working in a life & disability underwriting department in an insurance (or preferably) a reinsurance company environment at a senior level.
  • Experience handling underwriting for all major products including Life, Critical Illness, and Disability benefits.
  • Typical completion of or progression towards ALUCA/ANZIIF qualifications.
  • Competent user status for MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook or similar e-mail product.
  • Good working knowledge of Life & Disability insurance industry regulations.

Desirable

  • Typically educated to at least degree level.
  • Previous exposure to preparing and performing underwriting reviews.
  • Previous experience working in a life and disability reinsurance environment is preferred.
  • Good working knowledge of life & disability underwriting practices.
