About the program:

AIR6500 is the RAAF’s $3 billion program to develop a joint air battle management system that builds on the capabilities offered by Next Generation sensor and command and control systems. AIR6500 will create a fully networked ‘system of systems’ that synchronises air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, maximising situational awareness and enhancing the speed of decision making across the battlespace.

Your responsibilities will include:

Join Lockheed Martin Australia as a System Safety Engineer supporting the cutting-edge AIR6500 program. Reporting to the System Safety Lead, you will play a key role in the identification, analysis, and mitigation of safety risks across complex defence systems. In this role, you will:

  • Review system designs and operational procedures to establish and maintain robust safety requirements.
  • Analyse system hazards and develop safety documentation to support certification and test activities.
  • Provide independent safety assessments and contribute to safety-related investigations.
  • Support hazard analysis in collaboration with engineering and technical SMEs (e.g. ILS, HSI, Software, Cyber).
  • Assist in technical investigations, planning, estimation, and scheduling of safety tasks.

About you:

You bring strong analytical skills, technical acumen, and a collaborative mindset. To be successful, you’ll ideally have:

  • Degree qualifications in a relevant Engineering Discipline or relevant industry experience.
  • Extensive experience in System Safety Engineering within Defence or a comparable industry.
  • Solid understanding of safety standards such as MIL-STD-882E and the broader Systems Engineering lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex systems and produce high-quality technical safety documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of safety and risk management methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly and collaborate across teams.
  • An Australian NV-1 security clearance and ability to access/handle Export Controlled technology, data and information.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in Model Based Systems Development (MBSD).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Special Requirements:

Applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance and employment may be contingent on the provision of further personal information including citizenship to ensure compliance with international export control legislation and regulations.
