The Opportunity
The Exports and Veterinary Services Division provides export inspection and certification services and develops strategies to gain, improve or maintain market access for a wide range of foods and other animal products.
This is an opportunity apply your experience in technical assessment to support Australian primary industries, working to administer tariff rate quotas for products to reach various export markets.
This position is available for an s26 transfer to ongoing APS, or a 12-month non-ongoing contract with extension options.
The Role
This role will work within a team that negotiate technical standards and conditions with trading partners to maintain, improve or develop market access for the export of meat, fish, dairy, eggs, animal by-products and non-prescribed goods. Working in this team will see you responsible for the coordination and development of policy and technical input into international food standards and provides secretariat support to the Codex Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (CCFICS). Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Providing sound technical advice to internal and external stakeholders on chemical residue issues in Australian animal products for export
- Undertaking technical assessments of chemical residue risks in Australian animal products for export
- Monitor changes in importing country requirements for residues and contribute to related submissions to support Australia’s positions in market access negotiations and/or standard setting for food exports
- Contributing to the maintenance of DAFF’s online database (MICOR) of importing country requirements in regard to residue standards for a range of animal commodities
- Providing input into Ministerial and departmental briefing material, and correspondence to trading partner countries as required
- Engaging collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to manage residues risk in Australian animal products for export
The successful candidate needs to have sound judgement, be meticulous in their technical work and have a cooperative and constructive attitude to working with stakeholders and internal team members.
In addition, you will have:
- Experience in analytical chemistry, preferably with experience in residues of pesticides, veterinary medicines and/or environmental contaminants in food
- Experience with designing and implementing scientific programs or projects
- Experience with writing a range of documents including scientific reports
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, in particular the ability to produce clear and accurate written material in an acceptable style with conclusions supported by sound evidence
- Research and analytical skills, in particular the ability to use good judgement to collate data, distil relevant key concepts from complex technical literature and contribute to technical risk assessments, policy development and problem resolution
- Applicants must possess, at a minimum, appropriate tertiary qualifications in agricultural or animal science, a related biological science, or chemistry. Post graduate qualifications in these areas are highly desirable.
