NEX delivers free, confidential, and professional Rural Financial Counselling Services funded by the Federal and State Governments, supporting farmers, fishers, foresters, and rural-related small businesses experiencing financial hardship.
In addition to our core hardship support services, we offer a range of strategic business advisory and coaching services to help clients grow their enterprises.
Our tailored support is holistic, combining financial counselling and business consulting with wellbeing services to ensure business owners are equipped to manage both their personal and professional challenges.

About the Role
As a key member of our Financial Capacity Team, you will support both farming, agri business and small business clients through both recovery and expansion phases. This role involves:

Delivering strategic planning and business analysis to clients seeking to improve their financial position, make informed decisions, or transition their business models.

Assisting clients with grant writing, delivering business coaching, business succession and marketing strategies, are just some examples of services delivered by the Finance Capacity Team at NEX.

Providing free rural financial counselling to those facing financial distress, including debt management, cash flow planning, and business viability assessments.

Collaborating with clients to co-design action plans tailored to their circumstances, using a structured support framework.

Using Salesforce to record client progress and demonstrate measurable outcomes.
The ideal candidate will bring a proactive, solutions-focused mindset and a genuine commitment to supporting rural businesses—whether navigating hardship or positioning for future growth.
This position is based in South Gippsland (Leongatha) but will be required to support clients in the surrounding shires. NEX provides flexible working conditions to suit the applicant, however it is expected that hours worked will be a minimum of 60hrs per fortnight ( up to max. of 75hrs).

Key Responsibilities

Assist clients in developing and implementing strategic options to improve business sustainability.

Offer free, impartial financial counselling to eligible clients in hardship.

Work closely with clients to analyse financial data and identify growth opportunities or recovery paths.

Support small business owners through both crisis management and growth-focused consulting.

Engage in regular reporting, data entry, and outcome tracking using Salesforce.

Collaborate with colleagues across financial and wellbeing streams to provide comprehensive client support.
Additional Role Requirements

Frequent travel within the region is required; a current driver's licence is essential.

Occasional after-hours work and overnight travel may be required for conferences, training, or remote client visits.

Attend community and industry events to present/promote services to engage with stakeholder and clients and create referral pathways to NEX services.

This position is based out of Leongatha, with responsibility for supporting clients in surrounding shires.

Flexibility to support service delivery in other locations as required.
Training and Development
-
Successful candidates may be required to complete a Diploma of Financial Counselling within six months (RPL may apply).

On-the-job training and ongoing professional development opportunities are provided.

Regular supervision, mentoring, and access to a learning and development platform are included.
Employment Conditions

Flexible working conditions are available, with a minimum commitment of 60 hours per fortnight (up to a maximum of 75 hours).

Contract to 30 June 2026, with potential for extension based on funding and community need.

Reports to the Business Development Manager and is supported by our Counselling Coordinator.

Selection criteria

Agricultural science, business, commerce or economics degree, OR minimum 10 years experience in a financial, business management or counselling/consulting role.

Demonstrated ability to prepare detailed financial analysis for clients, and the ability to develop and present a range of financial and business improvement options.

Demonstrated understanding of rural issues, including a range of farm enterprise activities and business management issues.

Demonstrated ability to use technology to manage, report, highlight and present data (not limited to financial data).

Current unrestricted driver’s licence.

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a police check as part of the selection process.
Selection process
Applicants should address each individual key competency and selection criteria in their application and provide a resume detailing previous employment history and details of two work or professional referees.
At interview, applicants will be asked to demonstrate competencies in financial analysis, the development of business options and interpersonal skills based on a case study provided prior to interview.
Applicants must be prepared to undertake psychometric testing [personality profiling] to ensure best fit for the role and our organisation.

Salary
Contracted position up to 30 June 2026, salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
A vehicle may be provided for this position, otherwise a vehicle allowance will be paid for all business travel.
