The Australian Research Centre (ARC) Research Hub for Australian Steel Innovation (Steel Research Hub) is a 5-year, $28 million research entity supporting the Australian Steel industry’s transition to a more sustainable, competitive and resilient position through creation of new, higher value-added products and more advances manufacturing processes.
We are seeking a highly motivated Associate Research Fellow to work within the SRH’s Program 1 (Process Integration and Sustainability) and undertake a new research activity under Project 1.2.4 – Numerical Modelling of Electric Smelting Furnace Phenomena: Melting of Direct Reduced Iron Products.
The Associate Research Fellow will be responsible for conducting numerical modelling research to better understand major aspects of the material operations of an Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF). They will be involved in planning, data collection, data analysis, model and framework development, supervision, report writing and the communication of results to industry and through peer-reviewed journal articles.
The successful applicant will have two key attributes:
- Strong track record in Computational Fluid Dynamics and application of numerical modelling methods, and
- A track record in effective report writing and communications to industry and through peer-reviewed journal articles.
Working within a large scale, multi-disciplinary research entity (~22 PhD candidates, ~25 Postdoctoral research fellows), the appointee will be a key member of Program 1, Process Integration and Sustainability, dealing with methodologies for improving overall material resource utilisation and energy efficiency across the Australian steel value chain. They will also be part of the School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering (MMMB) in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. MMMB, which is one of the top Engineering Schools in Australia, is committed to research and teaching excellence through its world-class undergraduate and postgraduate programs in a range of exciting technological areas.
Position Description
The appointee will work closely with the Project Leader, as well as working collaboratively with a number of Partner and Associate Investigators from BlueScope’s Port Kembla Steelworks. The successful appointee will be supported through additional mentoring, training and personal development.
