Description:

Job Description
  • Permanent Role

  • Location: Sydney

  • 3 days WFO, 2 days WFH

  • Salary: $160,000 - $170,000 + super + share options.

We’re looking for a technically sharp and business-savvy Data & BI Technical Lead to help shape and scale the data strategy of a high-growth, VC backed Tech company reshaping the insurance experience.

You’ll be joining a data-led team already delivering big things and now they’re building on that momentum.

You'll be the right-hand person to the GM of Data, taking ownership of technical decisions, strategy, and delivery across BI and platform architecture. It’s a hands-on leadership role with a chance to flex your already impressive skills in AWS, Snowflake, dbt, and Python—while leading a team of experienced data engineers through big transformations.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Leading a team of 3 senior data engineers, providing technical coaching, 1:1s, and day-to-day support.

  • Taking ownership of technical decisions across their BI environment—data pipelines, transformation logic, and feature development.

  • Designing and scaling their AWS-hosted data platform, including Snowflake fundamentals like Snowpipes, Stages, and Integration.

  • Leading data governance conversations and designing access strategies that match our modern, self-serve environment.

  • Championing SQL, Python and modern ELT practices (dbt) while continuously improving the platform and feature set.

  • Playing a pivotal role in data strategy including approvals, proposals, and strategic planning.

  • Driving the implementation of new AI initiatives and integrating them into business workflows (think: SQL-generation, testing, validation, dbt/Snowflake pipelines).

  • Supporting cross-functional squads (FE, BE, DE, PMs) across 4 product streams, helping align data capabilities with business needs.

What You Bring:
  • Strong hands-on experience in cloud data platforms—especially AWS and Snowflake.

  • Deep knowledge of modern ELT tools—particularly dbt and Python-built pipelines.

  • SQL master—you can write and debug complex queries in your sleep.

  • Strategic thinker with experience designing and scaling cloud-based data environments.

  • Confident decision-maker who can challenge ideas, make the call, and rally a team.

  • Team leadership experience (small teams, up to 5 people) with a focus on coaching and mentoring senior engineers.

  • Comfortable in business conversations—able to speak the language of product teams, software development teams and translate ideas into roadmaps.

  • Bonus points if you’ve dabbled in AI/ML, especially tools that enable self-serve data capabilities.
