The Development Services Division is responsible for statutory functions of Council associated with development and provides high levels of customer service centred on efficient and consistent processes that provides certainty for all customers of the service and the community. About the Role:

We’re seeking a motivated and experienced Buildings Surveyor to lead our Development Services Building team. In this key leadership position, you will provide expert building advice, ensure legislative compliance, and guide the assessment and enforcement of building regulations across our city. You'll be a passionate advocate for high standards in building practice, playing a crucial role in helping shape safe, sustainable, and well-designed development outcomes. Your collaborative leadership will drive a high-performing team culture aligned with our organisational values, while also mentoring staff and delivering professional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert advice on building and construction matters under the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016.
  • Lead and manage the Development Services Building Team, supporting growth, development, and performance.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, timely assessment and determination of building consent applications.
  • Promote continuous improvement by reviewing and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of services.
  • Ensure legislative compliance across all building team activities.
  • Oversee enforcement activities, including site inspections and legal proceedings where required.
  • Coordinate and participate in the Council’s Building Fire Safety Committee.
  • Monitor and report on progress against the Building Team's Business Plan objectives.
  • Provide project management leadership for key initiatives and consultant work.
  • Drive a customer-focused service culture that delivers practical and innovative solutions.
  • Represent the Council professionally in stakeholder engagement and cross-department collaboration.
  • Lead a positive team culture that embraces learning, collaboration, and accountability.

To excel in this position, you’ll have:

  • A degree or postgraduate qualification in Building.
  • Accredited Professional Building Level 1 (or eligibility for accreditation) under the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and engage a team.
  • Proven experience in building development assessment and interpreting complex legislation.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and experience in procurement.
  • A current Class 1 driver’s licence.
