About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Legal Counsel to join our dynamic growing team.

You will be responsible for providing strategic and practical legal guidance on all employment-related matters, including employee relations, industrial relations, legal and regulatory compliance, dispute resolution, and policy development. Reporting to the COO – APAC, this role requires the ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Provide timely and sound legal counsel on industrial relations issues, including employment law, collective bargaining, dispute resolution, employee grievances, and workplace investigations.
  • Advise on compliance with local, state, and federal employment laws, across various APAC countries.
  • Support the APAC Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and HR team in making informed decisions related to industrial relations, enterprise bargaining agreements (EBA), and employment contracts.
  • Represent the organisation in industrial relations disputes, including arbitrations, mediations, and hearings before tribunals or courts.
  • Manage relationships with external legal counsel, ensuring the organisations interests are protected during litigation and dispute proceedings.
  • Provide training to HR and managers, on employment laws, industrial relations best practices, and the organisation’s policies and procedures.
  • Assist in EBA negotiations with unions, ensuring the organisation’s position is well-represented while maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Advise on the interpretation and application of EBAs, awards, and common law employment contracts.
  • Proactively identify and address potential legal risks in industrial relations matters.
  • Conduct risk assessments and suggest appropriate mitigation strategies related to employee disputes and employment law compliance.
  • Other tasks as directed by your manager from time to time.

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • Be fully qualified with relevant qualifications (law degree).
  • Admission to the supreme court of WA and current practicing certificate.
  • 3-5 years of experience in industrial relations or employment law, preferably within a corporate or in-house legal department.
  • Experience in managing and resolving industrial disputes, both formal and informal.
  • Experience with union negotiations and collective bargaining in highly advantageous.
  • Demonstrated expertise in employment law, including regulations related to employee rights, workplace discrimination, health and safety, and wages.

  • Team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills, including confident interaction with senior stakeholders, unions, external legal counsel, and regulatory bodies.
  • Excellent communication skills in the provision of legal advice.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manager multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
