As the Executive Director of Investigations, you will play a crucial role in ensuring public health and safety through effective leadership of the investigations division and positively contributing as a member of the Executive Leadership Team. You will be responsible for the investigation of complaints and other matters related to health practitioners and services, that raise serious issues of public health or safety, raise questions of appropriate care, treatment, conduct or potential systemic issues in health service delivery.Your task is to ensure that investigations are carried out with integrity and in accordance with legislative requirements and established best practices, thereby nurturing a culture of accountability and excellence within the division.

The Office of the Health Ombudsman is an independent statutory body established to protect and support the community through responsive complaints processes and regulatory action, driving positive change and confidence in the health system.
Critical thinking is vital in this role as you will adeptly manage complex, high-stakes investigations and associated risks, while engaging with various stakeholders, including the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and other government bodies. It is essential for you to have a comprehensive understanding of legislative frameworks, relevant codes of conduct and healthcare standards to identify issues of risk, clinical performance and conduct which may provide grounds for disciplinary action, immediate registration action or prohibition orders against a health service provider.
As you will be working closely with the Health Ombudsman, the other Executive Directors and a range of stakeholders, it's vital that you are collaborative, flexible and poised professional, with an engaging personality. The role requires working closely with other divisions and implementing cross-functional approaches which ensure that investigations are informed by relevant legal and clinical advice and obtain the required evidence for urgent regulatory responses, disciplinary proceedings or recommendations to address identified safety or quality issues in health care.
In this key role you will need to possess personal qualities such as well-developed resilience and judgement, and ability to implement agile investigative approaches that are person-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally safe, at the same time as being rigorous and procedurally fair.
As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for leading a team focused on achieving the Office of the Health Ombudsman's strategic goals while maintaining operational effectiveness. The role requires a strong commitment to, ensuring that all actions align with the values and priorities of the organisation. Ultimately, you will be accountable for achieving positive outcomes in patient safety and quality care while effectively managing resources within budgetary constraints and building collaborative relationships with high-level stakeholders.
