The Opportunity
The Senior Environmental Advisor works within the Planning and Technical Services Directorate and is accountable to the Manager, Environment and Heritage for leadership, technical and policy related expert advice and information in the provision of specialist environmental services spanning a broad range of environmental areas, including environmental impact assessment processes, environmental approvals, ecology, air and water quality, heritage, noise and vibration.

The role provides expert environmental advice reflective of industry capability and suitable to projects and programs in the field of planning and design, construction, operations and maintenance.

As a senior professional role, the incumbent will support the development and credibility of the Department’s technical, professional, and cultural reputation, with provision of high-level environment related advice and knowledge, in-house expertise, capability and corporate knowledge.

About You
The ideal candidate will have a high level of expertise in environmental management or a closely related field, with at least five years of experience in a similar position.

It involves a strong understanding of environmental impact assessment processes, technical investigations, and environmental approvals. You should possess in-depth knowledge of various environmental disciplines and related legislation, including ecology, water quality, heritage, air quality, noise, and vibration. Additionally, you must demonstrate the ability to critically review expert reports, interpret legislative frameworks, and provide high-level recommendations based on their analysis.

Strong project management and communication skills are essential, particularly in procuring and managing contracts with external suppliers. You need to be highly organised and capable of working independently while delivering timely and professional advice. The role will involve conducting research, analysing data, and preparing high-quality reports with actionable recommendations. The ability to communicate complex technical details in an accessible manner to both technical and non-technical audiences is important.

Beyond technical expertise, the role requires sound judgment, political awareness, and the ability to make informed and balanced decisions. You need to be solution-focused, proactive, and motivated, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at internal and external meetings and be comfortable representing the team and department, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that customer insights inform decision-making processes.

Qualifications/Experience
For appointment at the PO3 classification level, a recognised degree or recognised post graduate qualification in the discipline of Science or Engineering specialising in one of the following areas: Science (preference for ecology, biology, botany focus), Environmental Science, Engineering (environmental) or a related discipline to satisfy the requirements for prescribed qualifications.

For appointment at the ASO6 or ASO7 classification level, a relevant tertiary qualification in environmental management or similar field is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the classification level commensurate with their qualifications, skills and experience.

Special Conditions
A National Police Check (NPC) is required prior to employment with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport which must be renewed every three years.

Some out of hours and weekend work, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.

Remuneration
PO3 - $101,285 to $107,078 pa + superannuation.
ASO6 - $98,478 to $104,165 pa + superannuation.
ASO7 - $108,109 to $116,864 pa + superannuation.
