The role

As the Chief Health Officer and Deputy Director-General, Population Health, you will be at the forefront of the State's preventive health, public health and public health information agenda. This is an unparalleled opportunity to shape the future of healthcare, collaborate with key stakeholders, and lead a dedicated team of experts. Your work will influence health outcomes, inspire innovation, and protect the wellbeing of Queenslanders.

In this role, you will lead disaster coordination, emergency response, and emergency preparedness activities for Queensland at a system-wide level. You will maintain the State's capacity to identify and respond to communicable diseases and other health threats.

Queensland Health is currently seeking applications from suitably qualified medical professionals who have:

  • Experience in navigating highly sensitive issues within government, focused on achieving effective policy outcomes.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder relationships or the ability to forge credible relationships across government, private, and non-government sectors.
  • The ability to communicate complex medical information to the broader public in a manner that instills public confidence and understanding.

Where the successful candidate holds clinical qualifications, remuneration may be negotiated.

The Successful Person:

The successful candidate will possess highly developed negotiation skills, political astuteness, and intellectual flexibility, enabling them to navigate complex challenges with ease. You will be an assertive and confident decision-maker, ready to take on high-stakes decisions and collaborate effectively with key stakeholders to influence strategic leadership. Resilient and adaptable, you will excel under pressure, demonstrating a strong capacity to manage demanding high-stress situations. With a proven track record as a skilled communicator, you will also be able to articulate complex issues clearly and perform effectively under tight deadlines, ensuring Queensland Health's objectives are met with clarity and precision.

Additional requirements:

  • A medical degree and supporting registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Medical Officer by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency is mandatory
  • Ability to travel and work across Queensland
  • Current 'C' class driver's license
  • Vaccination against the following vaccine preventable diseases during employment
    • measles, mump, rubella (MMR)
    • varicella (chicken pox)
    • pertussis (whooping cough)
    • hepatitis B
    • tuberculosis
