Description:
St Mary’s House of Welcome is currently seeking expressions of interest for a Kitchen Support Chef (Volunteer) to assist with our Saturday Meal Service, supporting people experiencing homelessness, poverty, and social isolation.
This volunteer role is ideal for individuals with an interest in community service and food preparation who are comfortable working in a dynamic kitchen environment. Volunteers will work alongside our Head Chef and other team members to help prepare and serve meals in a safe, respectful, and welcoming space.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation & Service
- Assist with basic food preparation (e.g., chopping, portioning, plating) under the guidance of the Head Chef
- Support the efficient and timely plating of meals during service
- Ensure appropriate hygiene and food safety standards are upheld at all times
Kitchen Operations Support
Assist with general kitchen tasks including cleaning, washing dishes, and resetting the workspace
Monitor the flow of service and respond to kitchen needs as directed
Contribute to a calm, respectful, and responsive service environment
Teamwork & Communication
Work collaboratively with kitchen staff, volunteers, and service delivery staff
Communicate clearly and respectfully with team members
Uphold the values of St Mary’s House of Welcome in all interactions
Preferred Attributes:
Previous experience in a kitchen or hospitality setting (not essential)
Ability to follow directions and work in a fast-paced environment
Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset
Volunteer Commitment:
Day/Time: Saturdays, 8:00am – 12:00pm (weekly or fortnightly commitment preferred)
Location: St Mary’s House of Welcome, 165–169 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
Volunteers will be supported with a full induction and on-the-job training
