The Senior Curator of Ocean Futures is a leadership role in the knowledge team tasked with the ongoing development of one of the museum's six content pillars.
Ocean Futures concerns itself with the relationship between humans and the sea in its many guises. It starts with a simple fact: we all live on a blue planet.
The curator's topics areas include oceanic exploration, science and technology, issues relating to climate and climate science, and the understanding of the impact of humans on the oceanic environment.
The curator will be responsible for providing subject matter expertise, curating, commentating and delivering on a range of collection, exhibition, digital and outreach projects. The role works within the museum's overall strategic framework that seeks to inform, inspire and influence visitors.
The position is tasked with developing the Ocean Futures narratives and program and takes an important role in leading funding and high-level donation opportunities
The key duties of the position include
Key Responsibilities
• Supervise the curation of the Ocean Futures pillar, overseeing workflows and resource allocation, ensuring effective contributions to exhibitions, education programs, and online and onsite projects.
• Develop the strategic plan for the museum's Ocean Decade Program, liaise with the executive review group and other departments on delivery and reporting on progress.
• Support the Museum's outreach strategy to engage culturally diverse communities, nationally and internationally.
• Conceive, and work with colleagues to develop immersive programs that engage audiences with museum narratives through including exhibitions and other media opportunities and public programs.
• Make recommendations on the acquisition of relevant objects for the National Maritime Collection.
• Ensure that the museum's ocean science posture is aligned with state and federal legislation, policy and programs.
• Research and develop curatorial content for exhibitions, publication (both popular and potentially academic) and public programs, and provide leadership and expert curatorial input during exhibition and program development and review.
• Lead debate on Ocean Futures subject areas and seek to engage with and influence public perceptions about the role of the ocean in the national and international discourse.
• Actively seek external grants, funding and key donations and provide support to the ANMM Foundation's fundraising activities. Further develop the ANMM's consultancy work opportunities
Selection Criteria
• Demonstrated knowledge and/or qualifications in a discipline directly relating to marine science, which may include oceanography, marine biology/ecology, maritime archaeology, or marine technology/engineering.
• Demonstrated experience in productively liaising with communities and external stakeholders.
• Proven experience in meeting project deadlines, working within budget constraints and working across multiple diverse projects simultaneously.
• Experience in acquiring significant objects and collections in line with Collection Development policies and Protection of Cultural Objects on Loan requirements and demonstrated ability using collection management systems.
• Public engagement skills and experience in media, conferences, public presentations and digital outreach
