Chisholm is seeking an experienced Student Counsellor to support our Senior Secondary Students. Fixed term contract until 31 Dec 2028.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This position is accountable for providing holistic, wrap-around support to the young adult cohort, helping students achieve their study goals, engage in student life, and balance their personal wellbeing and welfare needs through both individual and group support.

The position delivers short term counselling and wellbeing services to Chisholm VCE / VM students, with the aim of improving student outcomes through early identification, intervention, support, referral and includes first response to students in crisis.

Key accountabilities include-
  • Provide support to students through drop-in sessions, appointments, class talks, presentations, workshops, resource creation, facilitating social connection opportunities and supports educators to service the needs of the student body from both proactive and reactive approaches to problem solving. As part of the role, the incumbent will be required to continually be innovate, exploring, and engaging new channels for supporting students.
  • Working with key internal and external stakeholders, provide support and/or guidance as an initial response to a student in crisis and complete post crisis activities in line with the Student Support and Engagement crisis presentation process.
  • Provide specialist expert advice to staff across the organisation on matters of critical incidents, specialist support services and avenues of referral relevant to student needs including agencies such as psychiatric triage services, police, child protection.
  • Provide young adult students with effective strategies to develop their mental health knowledge and self-regulatory skills, including problem-solving and coping skills to maximise student achievement.
  • Facilitate activities outside class times that foster engagement and build client relationships across a broad spectrum of the young adult cohort to support student engagement.
  • Provide assistance and guidance with general support enquiries regarding student life including finances, accommodation, public transport, culture, support networks (internal and external), clubs and activities.
  • Co-locate operationally within Senior Secondary department to increase understanding, normalise the presence of support services and readily respond to staff and student needs as part of early intervention, and tailored support.
ABOUT YOU

You are a highly motivated individual with well-developed skills and experience in

  • Short term, pragmatic counselling experience in an education setting
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting student well-being and engagement in a youth environment.
  • Provide problem-solving skills regarding finances, accommodation, counselling and/or welfare support services, in particular with a young adult cohort.
  • Experience in the delivery of information and advice, tailored to people from diverse cultural, social, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to raise awareness of social values/issues within the community, raise awareness with young adult student population and develop appropriate strategies to support where needed.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating groups and providing colleagues with professional peer support in the counselling domain.
  • Familiarity with the VET sector, welfare funding levers, human rights and related legislation

Qualifications required for the role:

  • Relevant Degree and relevant experience; or other formal qualifications with substantial experience and specialist expertise. You may hold qualifications in psychology, counselling, social work or community services.
  • Current registration or membership with AHPRA, PACFA, ACA or AASW
