The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is an independent statutory office established to protect the rights and interests of adults with impaired decision-making capacity, and children and young people in the child protection system and other visitable sites.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, maintenance and implementation of contemporary and innovative practice guidance that supports service delivery for clients (includes policy, procedures, tools and associated learning and development).
  • Develop, manage and/or oversee projects impacting on Community Visiting and Advocacy.
  • Understand, or can quickly acquire an understanding of, child protection, youth justice, disability, and mental health sectors, particularly in relation to regulatory and policy frameworks and service delivery.
  • Provide authoritative advice on legislation, policy and practice to Community Visiting and Advocacy staff.
  • Prepare complex strategic documents, briefings, correspondence and other policy documents for the Director Community Visiting and Advocacy, in consultation with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement systems and processes to ensure quality services, compliance with legislation and continuous improvement.
  • Develop performance measurement and quality benchmarking systems to monitor and evaluate the practices of community visitors to ensure achievement of the goals of OPG.
