The Role
An opportunity exists for a highly motivated individual with a commitment to safety and risk management to become a Work Health and Safety (WHS) Officer within Joint Health Unit North Queensland (JHU-NQ). The successful candidate will be the subject matter expert responsible for providing technical WHS advice to the JHU-NQ chain of Command and staff.
Working within an interdisciplinary team, the APS 6 WHS Officer will be accountable for ensuring they have knowledge of, and are in compliance with, relevant legislative frameworks and Defence policies. They will need to maintain currency regarding any industry changes, emerging practices and organisational changes related to their role, and be committed to continuous improvement of the WHS management system.
The APS 6 WHS Officer will be responsible for identifying and addressing WHS risks to capability, conducting inspections and audits, contributing to policy development and planning activities, and engaging with a variety of stakeholders in relation to WHS issues. They will also conduct investigations, and provide ongoing monitoring and remediation of WHS events across multiple healthcare facilities, therefore, travel, stakeholder engagement, and provision of mentoring and advice are requirements of this position.
The APS 6 WHS Officer will be required to work independently and with a considerable degree of autonomy. They will be responsible for managing and prioritising their workflow to achieve higher level intents.

Joint Health Command (JHC) is responsible for the delivery of healthcare services to over 70,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. Through the delivery of reliable, resilient and best practice health services, JHC enables a healthy, ready, and supported Force from enlistment through to transition from service.
Health care services are delivered through eight Joint Health regions across Australia. The APS 6 Work Health and Safety Officer (WHS) position is part of Joint Health Unit - North Queensland (JHU-NQ) and is based at JHU-NQ Headquarters, RAAF Base Townsville, QLD. Each Joint Health Unit facility provides a range of services which can include medical, nursing, dental, physiotherapy, mental health, rehabilitation, and in-patient care.
The JHC workforce is an integrated, multi-disciplinary team of Defence members, civilians, contractors and professional health providers. We work together to manage around one million patient health service interactions with Defence members each year.
This position reports to the JHU-NQ Commanding Officer, with technical guidance provided via the Joint Health Command EL 1 WHS Manager. The position is part of a broader WHS team which provides a network of support in the specialised area of safety and risk management.
Our Ideal Candidate
An enthusiastic self-starter, the ideal candidate will have experience in work health and safety (WHS) and risk management roles. They will demonstrate strong technical skills and knowledge in complex WHS management and possess a sound understanding of legislative frameworks and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
They must be able to exercise both initiative and judgment in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. They must be able to work autonomously, as well as part of a team and have excellent communication skills in order to develop productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
The ideal candidate must be flexible, adaptable and comfortable with managing change. They will have the ability to prioritise their workload when faced with competing demands, and have the ability to respond to WHS events in a proactive, positive and dynamic way. They will also be committed to ongoing professional development and maintenance of technical currency to ensure timely and accurate advice to the chain of Command. Attention to detail and records management skills are essential.
