Position Summary

Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC) is a community controlled Public Benevolent Institution delivering human services and social enterprise activities for the benefit of Aboriginal people from the Alice Springs Town Camps, urban Alice Springs, and Central Australia.

This senior position has been jointly funded by the Northern Territory Government Department Families, Housing and Communities (TFHC), and the Warlpiri Education and Training Trust Advisory Committee (WETT AC) to work in partnership with community stakeholders in Willowra, Nyirrpi and Yuendumu to coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of both WETT AC activities, and the Community Youth Diversion Program.

The position will lead a team of CAYLUS Youth Workers to implement both programs, and work more broadly across the CAYLUS service area, responding to volatile substance use, and supporting regional youth service providers to develop their capacity to deliver diverse and innovative youth development programs to young people of all ages and genders.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with community Elders and other important stakeholders including Local Cultural Authorities, Police, Territory Families, Clinic, School etc. across Yuendumu, Willowra and Nyirrpi, to inform the design and implementation of the WETT program and Community Youth Diversion programs.
  • Coordinate and implement the above programs in line with their approved plans and associated funding agreements.
  • Recruit, train, support and lead a team of CAYLUS Youth Workers to deliver these programs.
  • Assist communities to develop and implement other local initiatives for youth and families.
  • Promote linkages between remote communities and relevant programs and services.
  • Identify sniffing and other volatile substance use in each location and support a targeted response in collaboration with other agencies and CAYLUS management.
  • Assist CAYLUS to provide advocacy to government and services on behalf of remote communities, partner services and clients.
  • Represent CAYLUS in our work with community and agency stakeholders.
  • Contribute to maintaining and improving the CAYLUS office environment and CAYLUS administrative systems.
  • Work in compliance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Provide written and verbal reports.
  • Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

• Demonstrated ability to work constructively with a wide range of stakeholders to design and enact practical strategies to support young people and their families.

• Experienced in the direct delivery of youth services and activities for young people in remote communities in the NT, or a similar setting.

• Ability to work in remote areas, including the ability to drive unaccompanied to such areas and reside in them during the course of such work.

• Ability to work during the NT summer and winter school holiday periods.

• Ability to work in an informed, appropriate, and sensitive manner with Aboriginal people.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and proactively, seeking input from managers at appropriate junctures

• Ability to gather relevant information and prepare reports.

• Knowledge of youth issues, communities, geography, and resources in the region.

• Current NT Drivers Licence (ability to drive manual), NT Working with Children (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desired

• Qualifications in Community Development, Social Work, Youth Work, AOD, Public Health or similar are desirable.

• Experience and /or qualifications in the delivery of AOD focussed casework to young people and families.

• Experience living in a remote community.

• Local Indigenous language skills.

• Current First Aid Certificate, or ability and willingness to attain.
