We are seeking to establish a pool of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer's for permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2025 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2026. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.

The Role

The Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) is a support role that assists teachers in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

The AIEO acts as a liaison between the community and school to develop an educational program relevant to both educational and cultural needs. As the AIEO provides mentoring and pastoral care to encourage participation and achievement at school, and provide support and advice to schools and teachers on the management program of students at risk. They would also design and implement behaviour management plans, maintain records, and provide information to parents.

Additionally, the AIEO facilitates community contribution to the formulation of school policies on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, conducts interviews or home liaison visits, manages class resources, and assists with preparation and maintenance of the learning environment.

Eligibility

To work with us, you must:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
  • obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start; and
  • consent to a National Criminal History Check with the Department's Screening Unit.

    • Demonstrated good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively interact with students, teachers, parents, community members and professional staff on the provision and development of educational programs.
    • Demonstrated good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact on a range of levels in a variety of settings and with different audiences, including community members, teaching and other professionals.
    • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a school-level team and to provide multi-cultural direction in the development of the educational program, development of language resources, and evaluation of education and behaviour management programs.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively assist teachers in implementing educational and behaviour management programs.
    • Demonstrated good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs to students.
    • Demonstrated ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.
