About This Opportunity
This role offers an exciting opportunity to drive industry and stakeholder engagement, with a strong focus on securing funding through negotiated contractual agreements. You will play a key role in identifying, developing, and maintaining productive relationships with industry partners, NGOs, and government agencies to create new research collaborations, extend existing projects, and secure funding through programs such as the ARC Linkage Program.
Working closely with the Executive Dean (ED) and the Associate Dean for Research (ADR), you will provide strategic support to enhance research opportunities, foster impactful partnerships, and contribute to the university’s research growth and success.
Key responsibilities will include:

Analyse faculty goals and research strengths to create a strategy that drives research income through new, repeat, and extended industry partnerships.

Implement an engagement plan to grow contract research and consultancy revenue.

Boost the number of faculty members involved in commercially sponsored research.
-
Increase applications for competitive industry funding schemes.
-
Ensure strong ROI, profit, and margins from research partnerships.

Advise faculty leadership on strategies to enhance academic-industry collaboration.

Work with the Office of Strategic Partnerships and BDM Community of Practice to align faculty initiatives with university-wide goals.

Actively use the university’s Business Development Pipeline for tracking prospects and sharing insights.

Organize and lead workshops that connect industry partners with academic experts to foster business development.

Maintain accurate data on revenue pipelines and ensure adherence to university values and commercial frameworks.

About You
-
Postgraduate qualifications in business, law, or a relevant discipline. Extensive business development experience (preferably in the public sector research, research for development, or tertiary education and research sectors) and proven management expertise and other relevant education/training.

Demonstrated skills in business development to generate negotiated research funding at a senior level, preferably within a large, complex institution.
-
Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use innovative thinking when developing a robust approach or finding solutions to problems under the pressure of tight deadlines.

Demonstrated experience in successfully engaging with stakeholders and industry partners and in undertaking research negotiations.
-
Proven ability to proactively liaise across related functional areas of the University, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Track record of success in generating significant complex funded programs with diverse stakeholders.
-
High level interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, including the ability to establish cooperative working relationships with staff across the University as well as with key external partners.

Ability to prioritise competing work demands and to meet deadlines, with a high level of commitment to provision of customer service, including the ability to work with integrity, discretion and sound judgement.

Ability to effectively undertake records management and documentation of procedures.
Desirable

Project management experience.

Experience in drafting business plans.
Organisational Relationships
The position reports to the Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Science.
It is expected that, where appropriate, the BDM will contribute to teams developing specific strategic relationships at the University level under the overall coordination of UQ’s Office of Strategic Partnerships – Government and Industry through a dotted line of reporting to the relevant Associate Director.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, blue card check, etc.
You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
