About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for either a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A) or Research Fellow (Level B) in Bacterial Biochemistry/Microbiology to develop their expertise and emerging research profile in the area of the bacterial cell envelope. This interdisciplinary project, funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, focuses on gaining knowledge of bacterial cell envelope biogenesis pathways for antibiotic targeting. The post will be based in the group of Prof Waldemar Vollmer at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and involves developing and using cellular and biochemical assays for key enzymes in bacterial cell wall synthesis and collaborating with the chemists, Prof Rob Capon and Dr Zeinab Khalil, to identify antibiotics from natural sources. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research: Establish a research program, collaborate on research projects, seek and manage research funding, publish in reputable journals, utilize best practice research methodologies, and participate in project discussions.

  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.

  • Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

Academic Level A

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in Bacterial Biochemistry/Microbiology.

  • An emerging profile in research in Bacterial Biochemistry/Microbiology.

  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

  • Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.

  • Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities

Academic Level B (in addition to Level A):

  • Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.

  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check.
