Background

The resort is owned by the Wunan Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in Kununurra, Western Australia. It was established in 1997 to provide support and services to the Indigenous people of the East Kimberley region. One of the main goals of the foundation is to promote economic development and self-sufficiency for Indigenous communities in the region.

In 2020, the Wunan Foundation purchased the Lily Lagoon Resort. The purchase was part of the foundation’s broader strategy to promote economic development and employment opportunities for Indigenous people in the region. By acquiring the resort, the Wunan Foundation was able to support a local Indigenous-owned business and provide employment opportunities for Indigenous people in the region.

The purchase of the resort also aligns with the Wunan Foundation’s broader strategy to promote sustainable and culturally appropriate tourism in the region. By investing in Indigenous-owned businesses and promoting cultural tourism, the foundation is helping to preserve Indigenous cultures and promote economic development in the region. Wunan’s vision is to be self-sufficient and free from government grants before 2030.

About the Resort:

Our resort is an Indigenous-owned property located in the stunning East Kimberly region of Western Australia. The resort offers guests an authentic and immersive experience of the local culture, while also providing a high level of hospitality and modern comfortable amenities.

It is situated alongside the stunningly unique Lily Creek Lagoon, 2km from Kununurra’s town center, and offers a tranquil relaxing environment to stay while exploring the raw wildness of the Kimberley Region. Set amongst three acres of lush green lawns, which rolls to the lakes edge, the property houses 24 king premier rooms, 6 self-catering rooms, 12 standard motel rooms and 8 budget motel rooms.

Wunan’s purpose is to ensure that Aboriginal people in the East Kimberley enjoy the capabilities and opportunities necessary to make positive choices leading to independent and fulfilling lives. Essentially, to have dreams and a real chance of achieving them.

To achieve this, Wunan has developed six strategic priority area: Leadership, Education, Employment, Housing, Health and Commercial.

The overall purpose of this role is to be support the successful development and running of the Lily Lagoon Resort, with a focus on creating a profitable social enterprise and an Aboriginal training and employment hub for the East Kimberley, as well as to support the broader objectives of Wunan.

Responsibilities (among others) include :

– Practice, maintain and where required/requested implement cultural safety practices and sound ability to perform and respect a multi-cultural organisation and community.

– Ability and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances with a good degree of flexibility.

– Oversee all aspects of the resort’s operations, including guest services, housekeeping, maintenance, events and food and beverage service.

– Liaise Maintain positive relationships with organisation stakeholders and organisation members as well as guests, vendors, and local communities.

– Adherence to all relevant laws, regulations, and safety standards, instructions, policies, procedures and the like.

– Participate in marketing and promotional activities to attract new guests and build the resort’s brand.

Qualifications and experience (among others) include:

– Approved Manager’s License

– RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol)

– Experience running resort, caravan park or similar.

– Indigenous background is preferred but not essential.

– Indigenous community exposure is preferred but not essential, however ability to work well in an indigenous environment is essential.

Pre-employment requirements –

. Satisfactory Criminal Check (not older than 6 months)

. Current Australian unrestricted ‘C’ class Driver’s License.

. Working With Children Clearance may be required.
