The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill multiple vacancies of Operations and Operations Support, Various Roles (APS3 and APS4) (Affirmative Measure - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples), in the Data Sourcing Division.

This role is only open to people that identify and are recognised as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, under the Affirmative Measures Guidelines . This is your opportunity to play a critical role in ensuring the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander voice and needs are embedded into our work outputs.

About the roles

We are looking to fill multiple Operations and Operations Support (APS3 and APS4) roles in various teams within the Data Sourcing Division (see ‘About the Teams’).

APS3 roles are based in Geelong, Canberra or Melbourne. They are responsible for the timely collection of household and business information including confidential data. Roles and responsibilities vary, however typical responsibilities include:

  • Representing the ABS as a first point of contact by taking inbound calls to provide information, answer general questions and assist with data collections.
  • Making outbound calls to data providers.
  • Responding to written enquiries received from data providers.
  • Providing subject matter support and advice to data providers.
  • Accurately recording all interactions with, and information from, data providers in line with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Administrative support of the operational interviewer workforce (i.e. arranging travel, ordering office requisites).
  • Dispatching and receiving survey materials and provider correspondence.

APS4 roles are based in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney . They work as part of teams that are responsible for the timely collection of household and business information including confidential data. Roles and responsibilities vary, however typical responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining productive relationships with key stakeholders to achieve data supply with minimal provider burden.
  • Acting as an escalation point for more complex questions or issues.
  • Working autonomously to manage workload and operational requirements to deliver agreed outcomes.
  • Project support (i.e. capability development, work health and safety, pay and leave).
  • Assisting with team support functions including work allocations and monitoring, operational planning, knowledge management and progress reporting.

What we are looking for (selection criteria)

To be suitable at the APS3 level you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including phone skills.
  • Customer service experience, including demonstrated ability to resolve enquiries from members of the public.
  • Ability to work as part of a team that may be geographically dispersed, in a fast-paced changing environment.
  • Accurate data entry skills.
  • Strong record keeping skills with an ability to accurately document conversations, decisions and actions.
  • Good proficiency with I.T systems e.g., Microsoft Suite.
  • Ability to understand and follow relevant processes and procedures.

To be suitable at the APS4 level you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively engage with and manage stakeholders/customers.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team and ensure work is delivered on time and to expected
  • Capacity to identify potential issues and propose appropriate solutions using sound judgement and reasoning.
  • Capacity to identify innovations and implement improved work practices.
  • Excellent proficiency with I.T systems e.g., Microsoft Suite.
  • Ability to understand and follow processes and procedures to ensure work is delivered.
