Are you a people-person with great communication skills who values collaborating and working as part of a team? Do you have experience in leading and coaching groups of citizen volunteers or coordinating a volunteer program? The Senior Technical Officer of the Species and Herbarium Collections (SHC) team is a unique opportunity to not only support the maintenance, operation and curation of the Queensland Herbarium scientific plant collections but will also be the coordinator of our citizen volunteer program. Due to the nature of this position and supervision of volunteers, the successful applicant will be required to work solely from the Queensland Herbarium (Toowong), full-time, with limited ability to work remotely or from other sites (with exceptions approved on a case-by-case basis).
This role is open to all applicants, however applicants who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island that meet the minimum requirements for the role will be given priority consideration and invited to participate in the next selection activity.
The Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science unit (QHBS) is the centre for science, research and information on Queensland's ecosystems and species of plants, fungi, algae and animals. QHBS contributes biodiversity science and information relied upon by a broad range of stakeholders including industry sectors, landholders, and the community for the management of the state's biodiversity. The main role as a Senior Technical Officer is to:
. Coordinate and lead the Species and Herbarium Collections volunteer program' assist in the maintenance of the Queensland
. Assist in the maintenance of the QHBS collections, their associated data and documentation including digitisation of specimens at high resolution; destructive sampling of specimens; retrieval of specimens requested for loan; providing technical support and assistance, as part of a team, in approved projects and initiatives associated with Herbarium collections, specimen processing, data and information and support others to access material as required.
