What’s Environmental Health?
If you are reading this ad, you’re probably already in on the secret!!! Environmental Health is one of the least well known but most interesting and rewarding careers. Every day is different. You’re working with the community to improve public health outcomes across a number of specialties. You will deal with food, wastewater and noise and odour issues that affect people in their everyday lives… to name just a few!
You’ll be acting locally to put your science knowledge to a use in a way that helps to reduce illness and disease in the local community, protects our planet and our future. You may also be called on in emergency situations e.g. bushfires and flood to provide specialist advice and recovery assistance – sounds pretty interesting and rewarding huh?
Who is Kernow?
Kernow has been at the forefront of the environmental health industry in Victoria for more than 30 years. We’re different, because we are a medium sized private company with more than 50 Environmental Health Officers across metro and rural areas. We also have a large immunisation team and support personnel. Our staff have significant expertise and are respected leaders in the field. We have long standing relationships with a number of large and small councils in metro and rural Victoria and provide short-term contracting solutions to various other councils within Victoria.
But what really sets us apart is our training and our People and Culture programs. They really are best practice and our culture is like no other!
What’s my day to day look like?
Due to an internal promotion and growth, we are looking for two Environmental Health Officers for our North East team; one based in Wangaratta (Rural City of Wangaratta) and one in Cobram (Shire of Moira). The roles would suit an experienced and /or enthusiastic Environmental Health Professional interested in a tree change within one of Victoria’s most idyllic regional locations.
Here's how you’ll be spending your days:
-
Working closely with Kernow’s Moira / Wangaratta teams and the Team Leader, North East to deliver the Environmental Health Service;
-
Undertaking food and health premises compliance inspections;
-
Waste water assessments and on-site inspections;
-
Investigating food safety and public health complaints;
-
Providing tobacco educational visits and compliance inspections;
-
Undertaking food sampling visits; and
-
Investigating infectious disease notifications.
What do you need from me?

Supplementing this experience, you will possess an Environmental Health qualification, Bachelor of Health Science or other relevant tertiary qualification. Graduates of Environmental Health are also encouraged to apply as on the job training will be provided.
You will have excellent communication skills and you’ll be happy working both autonomously and collaboratively within a team environment. You’ll be great with people and be able to manage different stakeholders. You will be motivated to develop professionally and embrace new technology. You will also hold a valid Australian drivers licence.
