Principal Data and Insights Lead – VPS 6 – Fixed term (12 months)
What you'll do
As the Principal Data and Insights Lead, you'll take on a hands-on leadership role within the Data and Reporting function of the Data Collection, Insights and Improvement branch. Your work will influence how public sector workforce data is collected, analysed and used to support decision-making across government.
In this role, you will:
- Lead a small team focused on developing high-quality data products and visualisations using SQL, Power BI, VB and Microsoft Fabric
- Play a key role in transitioning legacy systems to secure, scalable cloud-based platforms as part of the Commission's data modernisation agenda
- Guide the use of diagnostic and predictive analytics to inform policy, planning and reform
- Build and uphold strong data governance practices to ensure integrity, privacy and compliance
- Communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, accessible way for a range of stakeholders
- Foster a positive team culture that supports collaboration, learning and continuous improvement
Who we're looking for
We're seeking a strategic and experienced data leader with strong technical capabilities and a passion for public value.
To succeed in this role, you'll need:
- Advanced skills in SQL, Power BI, Azure, Microsoft Fabric and VB, with experience managing enterprise data systems
- A strong foundation in data governance and quality assurance, with the ability to ensure compliance with legislative and organisational standards
- Proven leadership skills with a collaborative, growth-oriented approach to team development
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate data into insights for non-technical audiences
- A genuine interest in supporting public sector reform and a strong alignment with Victorian public sector values
