Who we are - Biosecurity AnimalAt the Divisional level, we enable and manage the safe trade in aquatic and terrestrial animals, reproductive materials, animal and biological products. We protect, maintain and improve animal and marine health for Australia. Our work brings both challenges and opportunities because we operate in an environment of changing risks, with disease risks influenced by patterns of global trade, climate change and the emergence of new diseases, as well as trade, legal and regulatory risks.
The Biologicals and Dairy Team provides technical and scientific advice and negotiates certification to meet import conditions for a broad range of biological and dairy products. We assess the biosecurity risks associated with the importation of these products and recommend appropriate risk management measures. We research, analyse and interpret complex scientific information to develop and review biosecurity policy in line with legislation and international standards. We prepare accurate, clear and concise briefing materials and reports on technical animal biosecurity issues. We represent the department during engagement with domestic and international governments and industry stakeholders concerning technical, complex, contentious and or sensitive issues. We also engage with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders including relevant sections of the department, other government agencies, industry representatives and the general public.

The Job
We are seeking a collaborative, focussed and motivated individual to provide technical and policy advice and engage with stakeholders on the biosecurity risks associated with our commodities. The duties of the position include but are not limited to:
- assessing the biosecurity risk of imported products and the preparation of risk assessments and technical advice for internal stakeholders,
- researching, analysing and interpreting complex scientific information to develop and review biosecurity policy in line with legislation and international standards,
- responding to market access requests, including negotiating health certificates with foreign governments,
- preparing accurate, clear and concise briefing materials and reports on technical animal biosecurity issues,
- representing the department during engagement with domestic and international governments and industry stakeholders concerning technical, complex, contentious and or sensitive issues,
- engaging with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders including relevant sections of the department, other government agencies, industry representatives and the general public.
