The NT Department of Lands, Planning and Environment is recruiting to fill the ongoing role of Environmental Mining Officer with the Central Mining Team.
The Role
As an Environmental Mining Officer, you'll be responsible for administering the Environment Protection (EP) Act 2019 as it relates to mining activities across the Territory. From assessing licence applications to conducting site inspections and supporting regulatory enforcement, you'll play a critical role in ensuring the environmental integrity of mining operations.
Working as part of a small, high-performing team, you will provide expert advice to operators and stakeholders, supporting effective and consistent service delivery.
Key Duties
- Evaluate reports and data relating to mining activities applying specialist knowledge in water chemistry, waste rock characterisation, hydrology, engineered landform designs and environmental management and monitoring.
- Provide technical advice, interpretive reports and recommendations of a high professional standard to the Mining Division to assist with and support assessment and regulation consistent with the EP Act.
- Participate in and contribute to meetings with industry and government providing assessment and regulatory advice.
- Support the Mining Team Manager in an advisory capacity including maintaining service delivery timeframes.
- Participate in and undertake other duties as required by the Executive Director Mining, including regulatory compliance and enforcement activities.
About you

- Tertiary qualifications in a scientific or environmental discipline relevant to mining.
- The ability to analyse and interpret complex data from diverse sources, develop practical solutions, and clearly communicate outcomes relating to environmental issues in the mining sector, in line with legislation, guidelines, and standards.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, including with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and professionally to support assessment and regulatory processes, including the interpretation of relevant legislation.
- The ability to manage project timelines effectively and keep stakeholders informed of progress.
- Experience in managing and using spatial data, including the use of relevant software such as GIS.
