Residential Support Worker

  • Casual positions located in Kununurra
  • Salary $37.35 p/hr (higher for casual) + super + regional allowance of $5.57 p/hr

HOPE has been a provider of community services in Western Australia for over 120 years, providing much needed support for people in the areas of alcohol and other drugs, mental health, justice and family and domestic violence.

About the Opportunity

The role’s primary function is to work with other staff to create a safe and respectful home environment for young people to assist them to take responsibility and make healthy life choices.

Facilitate activities and support young people to achieve their goals, developed in their strengths based daily personalised program, and bail conditions whilst in the residential services.

Shifts are varied. There is a mixture of weekday shifts, weekday evening/overnight shifts and weekend day/overnight shifts. Staff work a mixture of shifts as part of their role.

Reporting of incidents as required by HOPE and funding body and within contractual timeframes.

Requirements of the Role:

  • Staff are to work within Bail Practice Manual and HOPE policy to provide a safe environment for young people residing in the service and for co-workers.
  • Support up to 4 young people in a residential service when on shift. Support young people to achieve their goals and bail conditions through pro-social activities.
  • Support the facilitation of the strengths based personalised program for the young person developed by the Coordinator.
  • Ensure regular conversations occur with each young person and Coordinator regarding their progress and satisfaction in implementing their activity plan.
  • Provide opportunities for young people to experience healthy lifestyle and recreational activities.
  • Be a role model to young people and provide them with non-judgmental and compassionate support.
  • Transport young people to and from programs and appointments, as required.
  • Support young people with supervised family visits (where approved and appropriate)

About you:

  • Minimum Certificate III in Community Services, Youth Work, AOD or similar qualification, or relevant level of experience (minimum 1 year in a similar role).
  • Experience in delivery of services (programs) to young people (group or one to one).
  • Experience and / or willingness to work with young people with challenging behaviours.
  • Ability to communicate well with young people, and an understanding of Aboriginal culture.
  • Ability to use Microsoft office programs and Client Management Systems for reporting and record keeping.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to manage difficult situations.
  • Ability to prepare meals & maintain a clean and healthy environment.
  • Ability to engage in outdoor recreational activities.
  • An understanding of and adherence to working within personal and professional boundaries.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Current knowledge of and commitment to Equal Opportunity in all aspects of employment and service delivery.
  • A broad knowledge of drug and alcohol, mental health and youth justice issues and how they impact on young people.
  • Has knowledge of Trauma Informed Practices and Care.
  • Knowledge of the effects of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) on young people (or willingness to undertake training).
  • MHFA certification.
  • Current knowledge of and commitment to Equal Opportunity in all aspects of employment and service delivery.
  • An interest in a range of hobbies, e.g., woodwork, craft, gardening, food and cooking.

Appointments will be subject to Australian residency/visa, satisfactory National Police check (within 3 months), Current C or A class driver's license, First Aid Certificate, verification of identification by Department of Justice (DOJ) prior to appointment, and suitable referee.
