Our discoveries today will lead to better health tomorrow. A key function within the People & Culture team, is the Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) Team. The HSW Team are responsible for leading, advising and coordinating HSW matters and strive to impact a positive safety culture across Garvan. The HSW Team is responsible for workplace health and safety, injury management, wellbeing, compliance and biosafety.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This is an entry level role for someone with a keen passion for safety and willingness to learn! The Health, Safety & Injury Coordinator is a crucial member of the HSW Team, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, promoting a culture of safety and supporting HSW initiatives and programs. This role requires 4 days on site presence.

Salary: $70,000 + 11.5% super + salary packaging

Employment Type: Full time permanent or part time (4 days a week).

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The key responsibilities include:

  • Having a strong onsite presence to make a real difference to the HSW culture at Garvan.

  • Oversee the injury and workers compensation processes including payroll updates and liaising with all parties as the Return-to-Work

  • Support with the implementation of the Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) and keeping documentation up to date and relevant

  • Lead Garvan safety consultation mechanisms

  • Coordinate safety activities including minute taking, drafting report data, updating the intranet site and safety noticeboards

  • Act as the friendly first point of contact for the HSW team, managing queries and escalating within the team where needed

  • Coordinate HSW training and arrange external safety training when required

  • Support the onboarding process for new Garvan staff ensuring they are made aware of our systems, processes and where to go for help

  • Provide day-to-day management and user assistance of HSW systems and databases including Workday, JIRA and Rapid

  • Complete cyclical audits and monitoring processes

  • Member of emergency management team and first responder for onsite incidents

  • Contribute to special projects as required

  • Contribute to a positive ‘safety culture’ within Garvan

  • Partner with stakeholders (including People Leaders & WHS Committee Members) to actively assess and deliver safety outcomes

ABOUT YOU

This role is a great opportunity for someone looking to start out in workplace health and safety or someone looking to expand their skills.

The key skills and experience required:

  • RTW Coordinator Certificate for NSW

  • Demonstrated success and previous experience in an administrative role

  • Demonstrated commitment to quality in all activities

  • Willingness to learn new skills and be flexible in work practices

  • Strong customer service ethic and approach

  • Excellent written and oral communication

  • Competent in the use of key desktop applications (MSWord, Confluence)

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a small team

  • Previous experience as a RTW Coordinator is highly regarded

  • Previous experience in a WHS role or completion of Cert IV in WHS is highly regarded
