An exciting opportunity exists to join the Murray-Darling Basin and Intergovernmental Unit in the Water Security, Policy and Planning Branch overseeing arrangements for the management of the River Murray in South Australia.

Multiple short-term and long-term temporary contracts and vacancies are available at the ASO5, ASO6 and ASO7 classification levels. Applicants will need to clearly outline in their cover letter which classification(s) they are applying for.

About the team:

The Murray-Darling Basin and Intergovernmental Team works with teams across the Water and River Murray Division to oversee arrangements for the management of the River Murray in South Australia under the Water Act 2007 (Cth). This includes policy advice and oversight of Murray-Darling Basin Joint Venture governance, Sustainable Diversion Limit compliance, trade and water markets, and all aspects of Basin Plan implementation.

About the Role:

ASO7 Principal Policy Officer

The Principal Policy Officer is responsible for leading and managing policy input into critical areas for the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) and the River Murray in South Australia. The Principal Policy Officer supports South Australia’s aspirations for MDB water reform by providing leadership and high-level advice, analysis and policy input to complex and inter-related water policy issues in partnership with stakeholders at state and national levels. Specifically, the Principal Policy Officer is responsible for advising the South Australian members of the Ministerial Council and Basin Officials Committee on matters of significance to South Australia and will represent South Australia various subordinate inter-jurisdictional committees.

ASO6 Senior Policy Officer

The Senior Project and Policy Officer is responsible for the provision of expert policy advice and the development and implementation of complex policy projects related to MDB water resource management. The Senior Project and Policy Officer supports South Australia’s aspirations for Murray-Darling Basin water reform by providing high-level advice, analysis and policy input to complex and inter-related water policy issues in partnership with stakeholders at state and national levels. The role coordinates input from across the Water and River Murray Division, Regional Landscape Boards, technical specialists and other key stakeholders to provide advice to the Manager and Principal Policy Officers within the Murray Darling Basin and Intergovernmental team.

ASO5 Policy and Project Officer

The Policy and Project Officer is responsible for policy advice and secretariat support for the implementation of MDB water resource management. The position also contributes to the development and provision of policy and technical advice on South Australia’s interests in the Murray-Darling Basin Joint Venture, inter-jurisdictional governance more generally and to progress projects initiated through the inter-jurisdictional committees, intergovernmental agreements and the Water Security Policy Planning branch. The Policy and Project Officer maintains effective working relationships with the Commonwealth and interstate intergovernmental units.

Contract:

This is a merit pool and successful applicants may be offered a role based on organisational needs over the next 24 months. Offers can be made against this merit pool for up to 12 months. Multiple vacancies currently exist in the team and applicants may be considered across all levels with offers made subject to relevant expertise and job suitability. There is a possibility of further extension or an opportunity for a longer-term employment.

Desirable Qualifications:

ASO5 - A tertiary qualification in public policy, business, economics, engineering, water science or natural resources management

ASO6 - Tertiary qualification in Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, Law or similar

ASO7 - Tertiary or post-graduate qualification in law, public policy, natural resources management, environmental science, economics or similar

Special Conditions:

  • May be required to participate in fire management and associated duties .
  • Current class “C" driver's licence and willingness to drive is desirable.
  • Some out of hours work may be required.
  • Regional and interstate travel including overnight absences may be required.

Remuneration:

ASO5 ($85,790 min - $95,413 max p.a.) plus superannuation

ASO6 ($98,478 min - $104,165 max p.a.) plus superannuation

ASO7 ($108,109 min - $116,864 max p.a.) plus superannuation
