We are seeking a Project Officer to engage and foster partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations across a range of climate justice research projects and community-led initiatives.

The School of Arts and Humanities (SAH) are committed to decolonisation and addressing wide ranging impacts of climate change, particularly those that affect Aboriginal peoples and their connection to Country. This position of Project Officer will significantly contribute to these priorities by building strong partnerships and outcomes for Aboriginal-led climate justice.

This position is situated within the SAH’s climate justice research program which involves several projects working alongside Aboriginal communities across Western Australia, including Whadjuk Boodja (Perth), Wardandi Boodja (Bunbury), Wilman Boodja (Collie), and the Kimberley. The climate justice research program involves projects for supporting community service organisations with climate justice and disaster resilience, inclusive community planning for net zero emissions, and youth wellbeing in a changing climate. Each project has a strong emphasis on place-based, Aboriginal-led, and Aboriginal-informed research and action. The projects are supported by Aboriginal Cultural Governance structures, which include Elders and Traditional Owners across Western Australia.

The Role

This role offers the unique opportunity support Aboriginal leadership for fair and just climate action. As the Project Officer you will engage with Aboriginal communities and partners across a range of community-led climate justice research projects.

You will engage with the projects’ Aboriginal Steering Group, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and Aboriginal communities who are involved in the projects as well as build relationships and strategic partnerships with potential Aboriginal partners and communities. You will help enable the community-led research projects to be implemented in a culturally-responsive, timely and impactful manner that appropriately responds to the complexities of research in partnership with Aboriginal Communities.

Key Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience of building and fostering relationships, partnerships, participation and engagement with Aboriginal Elders, Aboriginal community members and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations in Western Australia in research and/or community projects.
  • In depth understanding of and connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ values, protocols, cultures, histories and experience of respecting and elevating these within projects and with internal/external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to draw on lived experience as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Person to engage meaningfully, respectfully, and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • In possession of a current C class driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.

This part-time (0.6 FTE), fixed term position attracts remuneration of $92,087 to $99,353 pa (pro-rata) plus 17% University superannuation contribution, as well as:
