About the team
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government's national measurement authority. We play an important role in the Australian economy. NMI does this by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system.
We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services. NMI also administers the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are internationally recognised. We work to enhance and maintain these standards.

The Chemical and Biological Metrology Branch provides measurement standards such as certified reference materials, these include pure chemicals, gas standards, matrix materials and DNA standards. The branch also co-ordinates proficiency testing programs to assist laboratories assess their ongoing quality and performance. The branch houses three of Australia's national testing laboratories for anti-doping, forensic drugs and ultra-trace analysis. The branch delivers services across all of these fields and carries out research and development to enhance our capabilities in line with national and international requirements.
The Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory (ASDTL), as part of the National Measurement Institute, is the only World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory conducting the testing of athlete samples in the Oceania region as well as conducting research in the field of human sports anti-doping. The ASDTL provides testing service to two key clients, Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) and Sport Integrity Commission New Zealand (SICNZ), as well as international sporting federations and anti-doping organisations.
The ASDTL is a proactive team that effectively manages diverse tasks under tight deadlines while ensuring delivery of high-quality services to stakeholders is maintained.

Our ideal candidate
Our ideal candidate will have:
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025, WADA International Standard for Laboratories, technical documents and guidelines to support the development and implementation of quality procedures within the laboratory
  • Demonstrated organisational skills to manage complex workloads in a timely manner including the ability to oversee workflow and manage or assist others to achieve the section's key performance indicators for quality and safety
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and ability to work productively in a team and independently to ensure smooth workflow for the laboratory team and maintain positive and professional rapport with staff
  • Demonstrated experience operating a personal computer utilising standard software and specialised software such as data management using laboratory information management system (LIMS) Sample Manager, ChemWatch and WADA prohibited substance standard database (highly desirable)
  • Knowledge of liquid chromatography and/or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry as applied to the analysis of molecules prohibited by WADA (highly desirable).
  • Knowledge of health and safety management requirements to support the development and implementation of policies with experience in biological or clinical laboratory setting (desirable).

The key duties of the position include
As a Quality Officer in ASDTL, your key duties are:
  • Maintain the Laboratory/s Quality System
    • In consultation with the Quality Manager, maintain the WADA prohibited substance standard database including purchase of reference drug materials, preparation of standard solutions, checking of stability of prepared solutions through instrumental analysis (e.g. liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry) and inclusion of new substances into analytical methodologies with support from team leaders.
    • Perform and facilitate calibration of pipettes, balances, and other measuring equipment including keeping schedules and documented evidence of completion of tasks in database.
    • Update processes and templates to deal with new or changing circumstances, requirements or results where required (e.g. changes to requirements set out in the ISO/IEC 17025 or WADA International Standard for Laboratories, technical documents, guidelines or letters, the development and validation of new analytical test methods).
  • Maintain the Laboratory's Safety System
    • Assist in updating ChemWatch (online chemical management and compliance solution) through auditing of chemicals held within the laboratory and review related risk assessments.
    • Assist in ensuring waste is being collected and tagged properly and staff are familiar with hazardous waste requirements and storage.
    • Ensure that the monthly and six-monthly checks are being done in the area.
  • Service Delivery to Stakeholders
    • Assist in receiving samples from customers, data entry in the laboratory information management system (LIMS) Sample Manager, opening of samples, maintaining chain of custody and distribution of sample to analysts during major sporting events or as required.
